The long-awaited refurbishment of Canowindra’s Library and Community Home Support (CHS) building is entering its final stages, with construction now complete and the finishing touches underway. Furniture installation and final fit out works are expected to be wrapped up this month. Both services have made the move back into the new facility.

The multimillion-dollar project has been made possible through a combination of funding sources, reflecting its importance to the wider Cabonne community. Contributions were made through the Federal Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program, the NSW State Library’s Public Library Infrastructure Grant, and Cabonne Council.

While the move does not introduce new services, the upgraded building significantly enhances the delivery of existing ones. CHS will continue to provide essential community supports including aged care assistance, Meals on Wheels and general council services. The upgrade brings new amenities such as an improved client and staff environment and a dedicated Meals on Wheels freezer.

The refurbished library, now larger and equipped with new furniture and improved natural light, offers a more welcoming and functional space for learning, reading, and community engagement.

Beyond service improvements, the project has addressed longstanding structural and accessibility issues. The building now provides full access for the community, newly constructed internal public toilets, repair of damp related issues, and upgraded building services to meet modern standards.

The redevelopment has been years in the making. Initial planning began in 2023, followed by design development and Development Application approval in 2024. Construction commenced in May 2025, with the Occupation Certificate issued in late January 2026, paving the way for this month’s final transition.

With both CHS and the Library preparing to reopen their doors, the refurbished building marks a significant investment in Canowindra’s future, one that supports vital services, accessibility, and community connection for years to come.
